5 Creative Ways to Practice Music
Music practice is essential if you want to progress at learning an instrument, but it doesn't have to be boring. If you feel stuck practicing the same piece over and over, try one of these ideas!
Accompaniment Track
Find an instrumental track of the piece on YouTube and play along. This is a great way to reinforce rhythm and tempo. Look for recordings with other instruments to enhance the experience.
Duet
Find a friend and break the song into parts. For piano, one person can play bass clef and the other treble. If your friend plays a different instrument, try playing in unison for a different sound. There are so many possibilities!
Transpose
Challenge yourself by changing the key of the piece. Play everything one half step higher or try switching a song from major to minor by lowering the third tone one half step.
Easy Arrangement
Find an easier arrangement of the song, one that is too easy, so you can play it well after only a few tries. Playing something that you're already confident with will allow you to see the song as a whole, even before you're able to fully play the original version.
Style
Change the piece by taking the written dynamics and rhythm and adapting them. If this is a quiet, peaceful song, what would it sound like if played by a marching band? Can you reimagine an ordinary tune in 3/4 time as a waltz?
Though many of these ideas are not themselves an end goal, it's important to take breaks and make sure you enjoy what you're playing. When you return to regular practice, these ideas will have reinforced many of the important concepts - and made some fun memories!
